Furnace Troubleshooting

Why Does My Furnace Keep Turning On and Off?

Technician with a stopwatch observing a furnace to diagnose short cycling

A furnace that fires up, runs a few minutes, shuts off, and restarts again is called short cycling. The most common cause is restricted airflow, usually a clogged filter, making the furnace overheat and shut itself down early. Other suspects include thermostat placement, an oversized unit, or a dirty flame sensor. It is worth fixing promptly, because every extra startup wears the system down.

What Short Cycling Actually Is

A healthy heating cycle runs about 10 to 15 minutes, two or three times per hour on a cold Clarksville night. Short cycling is when the furnace runs for under five minutes, shuts off, and fires back up minutes later, over and over. You will hear it: the whoosh of ignition far more often than seems right, rooms that never quite feel settled, and an energy bill that climbs while comfort drops.

The Dirty Filter (Most Common Cause)

Start here, because this is what we find most often. A clogged filter chokes airflow across the heat exchanger. The exchanger overheats, the limit switch trips, the burners shut off, the furnace cools down, and the whole thing restarts. New filter, problem gone. During Clarksville's heating season, roughly October through April, check the filter monthly. If you have pets or live near a dusty construction zone in one of the growing corridors like Rossview or Sango, check it even more often.

Thermostat Problems

A thermostat in a bad location can fake the furnace into short cycling. Mounted above a heat register, in direct sun, or in a drafty hallway, it reads the wrong temperature and calls for heat, then cancels the call minutes later. Weak batteries can cause erratic behavior too. And on older mechanical thermostats, the heat anticipator setting may need adjustment.

If your thermostat is old, hard to read, or never seems to match how the room feels, it may be time for an upgrade. Our thermostat repair page covers diagnosis, relocation, and replacement.

An Oversized Furnace

Some furnaces short cycle because they were never the right size. An oversized furnace blasts the house to the setpoint in minutes, shuts off, and restarts soon after. It never runs long enough to heat evenly, and the constant starting and stopping is brutal on parts. We see this in homes where a contractor sized by rule of thumb instead of a proper load calculation.

Clarksville's weather makes this worse. Our winters swing fast: a mild afternoon followed by a hard freeze overnight, the classic "fool's spring" pattern. An oversized furnace exaggerates every swing, leaving you alternating between stuffy and chilly. There is no adjustment that fixes oversizing. The honest fix is proper sizing at replacement time, which is why we run a real load calculation before quoting any new system.

A Dirty Flame Sensor

When the flame sensor gets coated in soot, the furnace lights, cannot confirm the flame, and shuts the gas off as a safety measure. Then it tries again. The pattern looks like short cycling, but the root cause is ignition, not overheating. Cleaning the sensor is quick work for a tech with the right tools. It is covered in our guide to furnace blowing cold air, which shares several of the same root causes.

Why Short Cycling Damages Furnaces

Startup is the hardest moment in a furnace's life. The ignitor fires, burners light, and metal parts expand quickly with the heat. Short cycling multiplies those stressful startups many times over. It wears ignitors and blower motors faster, wastes fuel on constant restarts, and puts repeated thermal stress on the heat exchanger. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety issue, not just a repair bill, which is why we take short cycling seriously. A yearly furnace tune-up catches most of these causes, filter, flame sensor, blower condition, before they turn into a mid-January breakdown. The industry association AHRI publishes equipment standards and homeowner resources if you want to dig deeper into how heating equipment is rated.

One rule: do not keep resetting a short-cycling furnace and hoping it settles down. Check the filter and thermostat once. If the pattern continues, call (931) 800-6452 and tell us exactly what the furnace is doing. The pattern itself is the best diagnostic clue we get.

Is short cycling bad for my furnace?

Yes. Every startup is the hardest moment in a furnace's life: the ignitor fires, the burners light, and metal parts expand rapidly. Short cycling multiplies those stressful startups, wears the ignitor and blower faster, wastes fuel, and can crack a heat exchanger over time through repeated thermal stress.

How long should a normal furnace heating cycle last?

A healthy cycle typically runs 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times per hour in cold weather. If your furnace runs for under five minutes, shuts off, and restarts minutes later, that is short cycling and worth diagnosing.

Can a dirty filter cause short cycling?

It is the most common cause we find. A clogged filter starves the furnace of airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and the limit switch shuts the burners down early. The furnace cools, restarts, overheats again, and the pattern repeats. A fresh filter often ends it.

Why does my oversized furnace short cycle?

An oversized furnace heats the house too fast, so the thermostat is satisfied before the system finishes a proper cycle. It then shuts off and restarts soon after. Oversized equipment also leaves humidity and comfort uneven. Proper sizing at installation is the fix; there is no adjustment that makes an oversized furnace cycle normally.

Should I keep resetting my furnace when it short cycles?

No. Repeatedly resetting a short-cycling furnace masks the problem and lets overheating continue, which stresses the heat exchanger. Check the filter and thermostat once, and if the pattern continues, call (931) 800-6452 so a tech can find the actual cause.
